How to choose the right wine cellar

Four essential criteria for choosing the right wine cellar for your collection.

Aging or service?

A wine aging cellar stores your wines at ~12°C with controlled humidity. A wine cooler brings them to tasting temperature.

Built-in or freestanding

The built-in model integrates into your cabinets with front ventilation.
The freestanding model can be placed anywhere but requires side clearance.

Two zones allow you to keep reds and whites at different temperatures.
Multi-temperature wine cabinets

Frequently Asked Questions about Wine Cellars

The choice depends on three criteria: available space, the size of your collection, and your usage (aging or serving). For daily use in the kitchen, a small wine cellar of 26 to 30 bottles built into the counter is often sufficient. For a collection of 50 bottles or more, a full-height wine cellar offers a better capacity-to-price ratio.

Consult our complete buying guide for step-by-step assistance.

A wine aging cellar keeps your bottles at a stable temperature of around 12°C, with humidity regulation, protection from light, an anti-vibration system, and an activated carbon filter—the ideal conditions for storing wine for several years.

A wine refrigerator is designed to bring bottles to serving temperature, without the same guarantees for long-term storage conditions. If you plan to keep your bottles for more than a few months, a wine cellar is the right choice.

Learn more about the differences.

A single-zone wine cellar maintains a uniform temperature (10-14°C) — ideal for long-term aging and offers a slightly larger bottle capacity compared to the same size 2-zone wine cellar.

A two-zone wine cellar offers two independent compartments: a cool zone (6-11°C) for whites and sparkling wines ready to serve, and a tempered zone (12-18°C) for reds.

Please note that for some 2-zone wine cellar models, it is not recommended to set a temperature difference of more than 5 degrees between the zones without affecting their proper functioning.

If you like to have bottles ready to drink at all times while preserving the rest of your collection, the 2-zone is the best option.

Yes, it's the most popular installation type. Most of our wine cellars are designed for built-in installation with front ventilation, allowing them to be integrated into an island, under a counter, or into furniture without lateral clearance.

The standard counter height in Quebec is 36 inches; please check the exact dimensions on each product sheet.

Count the capacity in standard Bordeaux bottle format (750 ml) and always allow for a 20-30% margin – a wine collection grows faster than you think.

For everyday use, a wine cellar of fewer than 30 bottles is sufficient. For an active collection: 31 to 60 bottles or 61 to 160 bottles.

Serious collectors will turn to our wine cellars of 161 bottles and more. Champagne or Burgundy shaped bottles take up more space and reduce the actual capacity.

For small, entry-level wine coolers/cellars, there are several models available under $1000. For a wine cellar with a compressor and a higher quality cooling system, various models can be found starting from $1200. For higher-end models (such as Eurocave, Transtherm & ArteVino), these are available from $3000 for the smallest models.

It is important to consult a specialist to get good information before making your choice: quality can vary significantly from one product to another, even between two wine cellars in the same price range. A well-chosen wine cellar protects bottles that are often worth much more than the appliance itself.

Modern wine cellars operate between 37 and 42 decibels, which is equivalent to a quiet room. This is an important point if you plan to install your wine cellar in an open kitchen or living room. Transtherm models are among the quietest on the market (often below 39 dB). Compressors mounted on silent blocks and slow-cycle systems reduce vibrations to a minimum.

Maintenance is minimal. Clean the interior once or twice a year with a damp cloth and baking soda. Vacuum the front ventilation grill every 6 months. Replace the activated carbon filter once a year; replacement filters are available in our wine cabinet accessories section. Avoid chemical or abrasive products on the shelves and glass door.
