Understand the Differences between Whisky, Scotch, Bourbon, Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados and Rye to Choose the Perfect Glass!

The world of fine spirits is vast and fascinating. Each of these alcohols has unique origins, production methods, and aromatic profiles. Whether you're a whisky, cognac, or calvados enthusiast, selecting the right glass to fully appreciate every sip is essential. Here's an overview of the major families of aged spirits and the ideal glasses for their tasting.

Whisky, Scotch and Bourbon: Three Faces of Whisky

Whiskey

Whisky is a broad term that encompasses all spirits obtained by distilling fermented grains and aging them in barrels. It can be produced worldwide, with notable variations depending on the country of origin.

Recommended glass : Les Impitoyables is specially designed to enhance whiskies, but also eaux de vie such as Cognac, Armagnac, etc.

Scotch

Scotch whisky comes exclusively from Scotland and must be aged for at least three years in oak barrels. There are several types of Scotch:

  • Single malt (produced at a single distillery and made exclusively from malted barley)
  • Blended (a mix of several whiskies)

Recommended glasses : A tulip glass or a Glencairn helps concentrate the aromas and promote optimal tasting.

Bourbon

Bourbon is an American specialty, primarily produced in Kentucky. It must contain at least 51% corn and be aged in new, charred American oak barrels, giving it notes of vanilla and caramel.

Recommended Glass : A tumbler is often used for Bourbon served over ice, but a tulip glass will better highlight its complex aromas.

Rye Whiskey

Rye whiskey, particularly popular in the United States and Canada, must be at least 51% rye, offering spicy and peppery flavors.

Recommended glass : An Old Fashioned glass is suitable for Rye-based cocktails, while a tulip glass reveals its nuances when enjoyed neat.

Cognac and Armagnac: Treasures of Southwest France

Cognac

Distilled twice in copper stills, Cognac originates exclusively from the Cognac region in France and is aged in oak barrels from Limousin or Tronçais. It is classified by aging:

  • VS (at least 2 years)
  • VSOP (at least 4 years)
  • XO (at least 10 years)

Recommended glasses : A balloon glass or a tulip glass are perfect for releasing its subtle aromas.

Armagnac

Produced in southwestern France, Armagnac is distilled only once and aged in oak barrels. It is often bolder and more rustic than Cognac, with more pronounced woody and spicy notes.

Recommended glass : A tulip glass , narrower than the balloon, helps to better channel the concentrated aromas.

Calvados: Norman Elegance

Calvados is an apple brandy from Normandy. Different types exist based on aging:

  • Fine (at least 2 years)
  • Vieux (at least 3 years)
  • XO (at least 6 years)

Recommended glass : A tulip glass or a balloon glass allows you to appreciate all the aromatic richness of Calvados.
