How to Store Wine

Wine stands out for its delicacy and the complexity of its flavours. However, with delicacy also comes fragility: in order to keep its flavours intact, wine has to be stored under very specific conditions.

Having your own wine reserve is many wine lovers’ fantasy. If this sounds like you, rest assured you can make this dream come true more easily than you think.

Whatever your budget may be, the experts from our Montreal wine store will explain everything you need to know about optimal wine storage.

What are the ideal storage conditions for wine?

First things first, it’s important to know the best conditions to store wine in, notably the appropriate temperature, humidity level and light exposure.

With regard to temperature, you should avoid sudden changes. For optimal storage, aim for 12 °C to 14 °C, but don’t worry if you aren’t able to maintain a perfectly stable temperature. As long as temperature variations remain slow and gradual and stay between 10 °C and 20 °C, your wine will not be affected.

Concerning humidity, if you wish to keep your bottles for many years, you’ll need to store them in a place with a humidity level of between 65% and 75%. If the humidity level is under 65%, the cork could dry out leading to wine oxidation.

Additionally, light exposure can harm the pigments in wine. For this reason, we advise you tostore your bottles in a very dark place, such as a wine cellar. An empty closet or a basement are also good places to store your collection.

If you don’t have any suitable storage places at home, we recommend that you purchase a wine cabinet. These products, specially designed for wine storage, ensure that your bottles are stored at the perfect temperature and humidity level. They also limit the amount of light coming in.

How to properly store your wine bottles

The answer to this question depends on the amount of money you are willing to invest in your wine reserve. The most important thing is to make sure that your bottles are stored lying down to prevent air from eventually penetrating their corks.

If you’re the DIY type, you could try to build your own wooden bottle racks. Otherwise, you can purchase one of our custom wine racks.
